People travel from miles away to get to Kavern when the craving for something sweet hits. Known to some as the best place to get a snowball in Maryland. They’re also serving up ice cream and other frozen handmade novelties.
But, it wasn’t always this way, as Kelly Birmingham Coward, general manager and niece of the owners, tells the story. The building originally opened its doors as a movie store. Then, about 30 years ago, her aunt Kathy McLane and uncle Vernon Geis took over, renamed it Ka(thy)-Vern(on), and added a snowball stand. When their syrup distributor closed its doors, they started making their own syrup. Kavern now distributes its own syrup, supplies, and even ice to snowball stands across the state. The ice cream shop was added in the early 2000’s, and proudly serves Turkey Hill ice cream, including soft serve, with rotating seasonal favorites like the Pumpkin Pie milkshake!
Kavern is located at 8370 Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard in Pasadena, Maryland. They are open Monday through Friday from Noon to 9:00pm and 11:00am to 9:00pm on weekends.
